What are Dentures?

Dentures are removable dental prosthetics used to replace missing teeth and surrounding tissues in the mouth. They consist of artificial teeth attached to a gum-colored acrylic base, which is custom-made to fit the patient’s mouth comfortably. Dentures can be full or partial, depending on the number of missing teeth and their location.
Full dentures replace all the teeth in one or both dental arches, while partial dentures replace multiple missing teeth and are anchored to the remaining natural teeth using metal clasps or precision attachments. Dentures restore chewing function, improve speech, support facial muscles, and enhance the appearance of the smile, providing a functional and aesthetic solution for tooth loss.

Types of Dentures

Dentures come in various types, each designed to address different dental needs and preferences. Here are the main types of dentures:

1. Complete (Full) Dentures

Complete dentures are used when all teeth are missing in either the upper or lower jaw, or both. They consist of a full set of artificial teeth mounted on a gum-colored acrylic base that fits over the gums.

  • Conventional Complete Dentures: These are made after the teeth have been removed and the gum tissue has begun to heal. They are ready for placement in the mouth about 8 to 12 weeks after the teeth have been removed.
  • Immediate Complete Dentures: These are inserted immediately after the removal of the remaining teeth. Adjustments will be made over time as the gums heal and shrink.

2. Partial Dentures

Partial dentures are used when some natural teeth remain. They consist of artificial teeth attached to a gum-colored base, which is connected by metal framework or clasps to the remaining natural teeth.

  • Removable Partial Dentures: These can be easily taken out for cleaning and maintenance.
  • Fixed Partial Dentures (Bridges): These are permanently attached to adjacent natural teeth or dental implants and cannot be removed by the patient.

3. Implant-Supported Dentures

Implant-supported dentures are anchored to dental implants that are surgically placed into the jawbone. This type of denture provides greater stability and retention.

  • Fixed Implant-Supported Dentures: These are permanently attached to the implants and cannot be removed by the patient.
  • Removable Implant-Supported Dentures: These snap onto the implants and can be removed by the patient for cleaning.

4. Overdentures

Overdentures fit over a small number of remaining natural teeth or implants. The remaining teeth or implants provide additional support and retention.

  • Tooth-Supported Overdentures: These are placed over existing natural teeth that have been reshaped to fit under the denture.
  • Implant-Supported Overdentures: These fit over implants that have been strategically placed in the jaw.

5. Immediate Dentures

Immediate dentures are temporary dentures placed immediately after the extraction of teeth. They serve as a temporary solution while the gums heal and the final dentures are being made.

6. Custom Dentures

Custom dentures are individually made to fit the patient’s mouth precisely. They are typically more natural-looking and comfortable than standard dentures.

7. Economy Dentures

Economy dentures are a more affordable, one-size-fits-all option. They may not offer the same level of comfort or natural appearance as custom dentures, but they can be a cost-effective solution for tooth replacement.
